2016 Mexican Baseball Fiesta – A Quality Cultural Event in Tucson
The Vamos a Tucson Mexican Baseball Fiesta began in 2011 in Tucson. This international event completed its fifth year in 2015. It involves a partnership with the Liga Mexicana Del Pacifico or translated to the Mexican Winter League. The event is operated by Mike Feder, 30-year minor league general manager (15 years in Tucson) and President of the MBF, and Francisco Gamez, founder and partner of the Mexican Baseball Fiesta. Gamez played 10 years in the Mexican Pacific League.
For those not familiar with Mexican League Baseball, it is as popular as the MLB in Mexico. At games there is electricity in the air, music playing all the time, mascots on the field, fans dancing in the stands, tacos and tortas instead of hot dogs and peanuts. Fans follow their teams with such fierce loyalty and pass the love of the game on from generation to generation. It’s not uncommon to see three or four generations of family enjoying a game together.
On September 29 – October 2 we will welcome five teams from the Mexican Pacific League and the Kansas City Royals Major League Baseball Future Stars back to Tucson (Kino Stadium) for the sixth straight year. On hand will be the Naranjeros de Hermosillo, Yaquis de Obregon, Aguilas de Mexicali, Tomateros de Culiacan and the Cañeros de Los Mochis. The Naranjeros de Hermosillo are one of the most popular and successful teams in the Mexican Pacific League, having won 16 league titles and two Caribbean Series title. The Naranjeros won the Caribbean Series title in 2014. The Yaquis de Obregon won three consecutive Mexican Pacific League Championships (2011 – 2013), giving theteam seven in club history. The long rivalry between both teams will make for an intense matchup, games between the Naranjeros and Yaquis are considered to be the best in the league (think Yankees vs. Red Sox.) They played in 2015 on Saturday, October 3 in front of almost 6,000 fans.
Ticket prices at Kino Stadium range from $6 to $15. The MBF website is www.MexicanBaseballFiesta.com. The Mexican Baseball Fiesta has grown throughout Arizona and will now include exhibition games in three additional cities. Games have been set up in Fresno on September 17 & 18, at Hohokam Stadium, the Spring Training home of the Oakland A’s, in Mesa on September 23 & 24, and Round Rock (Austin, TX) on September 24 & 25. We also have games in Cananea and Nogales, Sonora.
Visit Tucson has been instrumental in the success of the Mexican Baseball Fiesta in Tucson. Past ticket sales indicate that about 30 percent of the crowd is from Mexico and in 2013, the estimated economic impact of the event was close to half a million dollars. Because of Visit Tucson’s established presence south of the border as Vamos a Tucson, we are able to market this unique event directly to the Mexican traveler to draw them here for that one weekend in October. We have event information available at the Vamos a Tucson Visitor Centers in the northern cities of Hermosillo and Obregon, where potential visitors can also purchase event tickets, book a hotel room, find information on area attractions and seek out shopping deals and retail specials. “We’re excited to partner with this great event for the fifth year to bring Mexican baseball back to Tucson,” said Felipe Garcia, Executive Vice President of Visit Tucson. “The popularity of this event continues to grow and we are proud to be a part of something that both locals and visitors look forward to every October. Over 1,700 hotel room nights were booked last year.” Visit Tucson is one of two title sponsors of the Vamos a Tucson Mexican Baseball Fiesta. Cox Communications is the other one.
